Allenton is a suburb situated 2 miles south of Derby city centre, marked by a fairly high pedestrian bridge; the spider bridge, built in 1971, so named because of its shape. The bridge is really a series of bridges, over a busy junction between the main Derby road to Melbourne Road and the Derby Ring Road.
The suburb is well connected to the city centre and surrounding areas by Arriva buses which pass through Allenton every 15 minutes. Allenton however has no train station. Shopping for day to day necessities in Allenton can be done at Allenton shopping centre on Osmaston road.
The centre has a variety of shopping facilities from food produce to DIY specialists, modern shops, stores, banks and other facilities that also have free parking directly in front of the shops. Also there are fast food outlets. Just across the spider bridge towards city centre is a market which opens Fridays and Saturdays and a flea market is held also every Tuesday night. Allenton has held its own market since 1961. Sainsbury's supermarket near Foresters Leisure Park is also in the catchment area for Allenton.
There are good sports and leisure facilities in Allenton; Moorways Sport Centre is one of them with separate swimming pool and baby pool at the top end, with free car parking on site. Behind the building, is a running track, where Derby Athletics Club train Tuesday and Thursday evening.
The suburb has also open spaces and entertainment facilities within the borders ; The Showcase cinema, on Sinfin Lane, is very close to the Allenton. The cinema, showing the latest films is surrounded by a selection of fast food restaurants. There is KFC, Pizza Hut and Mc Donald's all within walking distance of the cinema. As well as the cinema is Gala Bingo and Megabowl
