Description:

East Midlands Airport is an airport in the East Midlands, located at Castle Donington in the District of North West Leicestershire. The airport is owned by the Manchester Airports Group (MAG) which is controlled by the ten metropolitan boroughs of Greater Manchester and is the largest UK-owned airport group. The airport was originally a Royal Air Force station, RAF Castle Donington, which was decommissioned in 1946.

East Midlands Airport has established itself as a hub for low fare airlines EasyJet, Bmibaby and Ryanair, and serves a range of domestic and European short haul destinations, however. East Midlands has a good network of UK domestic flights, although Easyjet have withdrawn their flights from Scotland, leaving BMI Baby as the sole operator for these services.

The network of flights within the UK and Ireland from East Midlands airport is not particularly extensive, but this is typical for an airport which is positioned between three different cities (Derby, Leicester and Nottingham), rather than being close to any one city centre. Passenger traffic reached 4.72 million in 2006 making this airport the twelfth highest in the UK.

The five-million mark was passed during April 2007 according to the official statistics issued by the United Kingdom Civil Aviation Authority making it the 10th busiest airport in the UK. Parking at East Midlands airport is generally good value and easy compared to its main rival Birmingham Airport.

The official car parks spread out from the terminal buildings, so it can be a long walk unless you are prepared to wait for one of the shuttle buses. Accommodation also is available at several airport hotels in and around East Midlands which offer hotel and parking deals. Out of these, the Thistle is the closest to the terminal complex. Off-airport deals are also available.

The airport has excellent connections to the motorway network due to its proximity to the M1 and M42 motorways, bringing the airfield within easy reach of the major population centres of the Midlands.

The closest railway station is East Midlands Parkway, which is 4 miles (6 km) away and linked by a shuttle bus running up to every 15 minutes between 0700 and 2330. Skylink branded bus services operate to and from Leicester, Nottingham, Derby, Loughborough and Coalville.
