Description:

Derby had five Gaols all referred to as Derby Gaol, today only two remain. The Vernon street prison which served as a gaol between 1843 and 1919 was demolished and the site now has various offices, but the front part of the prison building remains in its original form.

Friar Gate gaol now owned by historian Richard Fox is open to the public as a museum. It has two cells, both have original doors and graffiti etched on by prisoners is still quite visible on the wood. The goal is a popular place for investigators and ghost hunters.
