Wirksworth Heritage Centre tells the story of Wirksworth, a picturesque and ancient leadmining town in the heart of Derbyshire.
The Heritage Centre was set up by the Wirksworth Civic Society to preserve the town’s interesting history and present it to visitors.
There are three floors with the ground floor housing the Crown Yard Kitchen, selling tasty home cooked meals, as well as the gift shop, Art Gallery and museum display area.
On the first floor, you will find the spooky Dream Cave with displays of the area’s lead mining history and the restored clothes of the local Gell family.
You will find the Home Front permanent exhibition about people in Wirksworth during the 2nd World War, along with a 19th Century banner which was made by a Wirksworth branch of the Friendly Society movement, on the top floor.
Local craftworkers Suzannah Doxey and Katie Brooks now also have some of their work on sale at this centre. The centre also encourages the study of individual family histories within the area.
