Description:

Situated above the picturesque village of Castleton in the heart of the Peak District, Peveril Castle is one of England’s earliest Norman fortresses.

Displays in the visitor centre tell the story of Peveril as the focal point of the Royal Forest of the Peak, a hunting preserve for monarchs since the 11th century.

The keep was built by Henry II in 1176 and is mentioned in the Domesday survey.

Visitors can enjoy breathtaking views over the Hope Valley following a climb to the castle at the top of the hill and explore the remains of the keep, including the garderobe (medieval lavatory).

A series of events is hosted at the castle ruins and guidebooks are available.
