Arboretum park was the first public owned park in Britain. The land was donated in 1840 by a former mayor of the town, Joseph Strutt. The park has a cafe, public toilets, changing rooms, sports facilities which include 2 five-aside-football pitches, cricket nets and basketball pitches. The Rose Hill Recreation Ground which has been created within the park is a modern playground for children.
This newly refurbished children's play area has three zones to cater for different age groups: Toddler zone; with a pirate ship, sand area with construction equipment, climbing equipment and swings, junior zone ; with swings, roundabout and climbing equipment and senior zone ; with challenging equipment for children aged 13 and over, including a zip slide and rotary cage.
