Description:
Darley Abbey is situated just off the A6, north of Derby in the Derbyshire countryside. It is considered an attractive suburb, consisting of restored mill cottages.
Originally an Augustinian priory, the Abbey was one of the most important in Derbyshire, until 1538, when it was destroyed in the reformation. The Abbey Pub is the only building remaining from the period and has recently been restored.
The suburb borders Darley park with its flower beds, shrubberies and lawns which run down to the river Derwent, popular for boating which has an annual regatta on its waters. On the banks of the river Derwent sits the mill complex, which is now is used by local businesses. It is also home to The Darleys, a restaurant which has views over the river.
There is no railway station in Darley Abbey but a reliable local bus service makes the area easily accessible form Alvaston, Borrowash, Spondon and the rest of the city.
Darley Abby has no leisure centre but the area is very close to the Queen's Leisure Centre on Cathedral Road, Derby, which has three swimming pools, a creche and cafe, fitness classes, squash and racketball.
