Easter holiday in Derby

30 March 2010

Description:

Easter is a religious celebration and one of the greatest feasts of the year, celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead and ends the Lent period. There’s no fixed date for the occasion as it’s the first Sunday of every full moon following the spring equinox.

People celebrate Easter in different ways. Some take it as a celebration, welcoming new life or season and others take this as an opportunity for a holiday. Here are some of the traditions that mark Easter in England.

Easter Eggs:

Eggs on Easter represent a new life is born in Christianity. Before chocolate eggs were popular on Easter, people gave egg gifts carved from wood or precious stones along time ago.

Apart from chocolate eggs, being a tradition for Easter, people also paint boiled eggs with bright colours to represent the sunshine for the new spring season and rolling them down the hill representing the stone rolling from Christ's tomb.

Easter Bunny:

The history of Easter bunny began from rabbits being similar with hares which were a symbol of the Anglo-Saxon Goddess of Spring Eostre and symbolise rebirth of nature following winter.

But Christians changed the symbol from hare to bunnys as they’re more rabbits than hares. It’s now a tradition of the Easter bunny to leave a basket of treats with Easter eggs and chocolates or parents hiding eggs for their kids to find.

Easter Bonnets:

For Christians it involves buying a new piece of clothing to church on Easter morning and making an item like a hat and enter it into the Easter bonnet competition.
