Description:
Despite wide disruptions on Airlines all across Europe, East Midlands Airport has remained open for light aircraft since Thursday 15th April 2010 and will be open for commercial flights today (Tuesday 20th April 2010) at midday, if airlines and tour operators choose to operate.
However, there has been a restriction on flights in and out of other UK Airports. As a result hundreds of people from Derby are unable to return home from holiday due to the volcanic ash cloud crisis.
Couples and families are facing a long wait for a rescheduled flight back to East Midlands Airport. One school in Ashbourne has been forced to close because so many of its teachers are stranded overseas.
Some travellers have opted for a 30-hour coach ride from Poland to Nottingham rather than wait for a replacement flight.
The impact has also been felt by businesses linked to East Midlands Airport in Castle Donington.
Many Guesthouses and hotels lost several bookings and have opted not to exercise their cancellation policy for those who are stuck.
But analysts expect the overall economic impact to be minor, since the disruption appears unlikely to last continuously over a long period.
National Air Traffic Services (NATS) has confirmed that UK airspace will progressively open today, unless there is deterioration in conditions.
The officials said that it is absolutely essential that people contact their airline before travelling to the airport for any flight because schedules will take some time to return to normal.
Travellers with car park bookings who have been affected by the recent events, are advised to contact the call centre on 0871 310 3300 to discuss their options with their booking reference to hand.
