The office for National Statistics yesterday revealed that the number of people on unemployment benefit in Derby and Derbyshire has fallen by 2.2% from last month.
It is the second consecutive month that the number of jobseekers has fallen in Derby and Derbyshire.Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce's last Quarterly Economic Survey, published last month, suggested that Derbyshire had finally come out of recession and that the local economy was growing again.
The survey also said that prospects for future employment levels had improved, with 23% of businesses planning to increase their workforces and only 8% expecting to cut jobs.
Despite the number of jobseekers in the region going down, in recent weeks there has still been evidence of jobs being cut.
Last month, Celanese Acetate announced it was closing its Derby factory with the loss of 460 jobs. And this week, RBS said it was looking to axe 2,600 jobs, putting 46 positions in Castle Donington at risk.
