Description:
Amber Valley Borough Council said in the past week two people had been contacted by someone claiming to offer the rebate and asking for bank details.
In addition the caller said there would be a £195 charge to access 12 years' worth of 50% council tax payments. The authority said it would never ask for such details and told anyone with doubts to get in touch.
A spokesman said similar types of attempted fraud had been reported involving e-mails but the move into phone calls was a concern. He added: "Amber Valley Borough Council reminds residents that its revenues division would never use telephone or e-mail to request details of bank accounts to refund overpayments of council tax.
"Neither would it charge for such a service."
