Description:
The company behind plans for a controversial waste treatment site in Derby has been told to provide more information about its impact on public health before councillors will give it their backing.
The plant would smoulder the waste to produce a gas, which would be burned to create energy. But residents and environmental campaigners have opposed the plans because they are concerned about emissions from the "gasification" process and their potential effects on health.
However, Derby City Council's planning committee was last night recommended to approve plans for the plant, to be located in Sinfin. But councillors failed to give the scheme their backing and ordered Resource Recovery Solutions (RRS) to come back with more information about the plant's potential impact.
RRS submitted plans for the plant, in Sinfin Lane, in May, as part of an agreement with Derby City Council and Derbyshire County Council to treat the entire county's unrecycled waste for 27 years and reduce the amount going to landfill.
The proposed move attracted arguments from objectors, including Sue Wilson from Osmaston. She said: "There are areas in the RRS reports where the data is incomplete or misleading.
Before last night's meeting they held a protest on the Council House steps. One protester, Gary Woolley, of Victory Road, said he did not want to see the plant build in Sinfin.
"I've got as much right as anybody in the world to breathe clean air - we all have."
Some campaigners say they felt they have now been left "in limbo" following the deferral.
