The Countdown for Christmas has officially started and the mad rush begins of what to buy and what do over the Christmas season in and around Derby.
This guide will help you with ideas for shopping, where the best places to shop and what events are on during the Christmas season for all the family.
There is a wide variety of shopping available for the residents of derby including Sadler Gate where there is over twenty shops ranging from Menswear, soft furnishings, opticians, ladies clothing, hairdressers, gift shops, florists etc... Not forgetting
Westfield the brand new shopping centre which has over 190 stores open until 8 in the evening on a Thursday and Friday.
Once the shopping is done, Westfield has the Showcase Cinema De Lux and restaurants to sit back and enjoy in.
There is also entertainment for the kids as lets face it don’t enjoy being dragged around shops and at Westfield, the kids can go and visit Santa in his polar bear paradise grotto on level 1.
And for the kids, when they get fed up of all the Christmas shopping and is in need of being entertained, The Christmas Playground is just what they need. Christmas Playground will be held in the Market Place from 7th December to 6th January.
This is the first time that something like this has come to derby and will feature a giant wooden toy sculptures which will provide a play area for visitors to the city centre seeking a rest from Christmas shopping.

This year’s production at Derby theatre is the Snow Queen. This festive season bring the whole family to see derby theatres debut Christmas production – a wonderful and heart-warming festive treat which will leave young and old alike gasping in wonder and excitement.
The show will be running from 26 November 2009 to 16 January 2010.

Derby Live production this year is Cinderella... “Yes Cinderella, you shall go to the ball” being staged at the Assembly rooms this festive period running from Wednesday 9th December to Sunday 10th January 2010.
This year they have two celebrities staring, Neil Morrissey from men behaving badly and waterloo road who is playing Buttons and Eternal’s Kelle Bryan as Cinderella.
Cinderella promises to be the most lavish pantomime ever to be staged at the Assembly Rooms, making an invitation to Prince Charming’s ball the hottest ticket in Derby this Christmas.

Derby Live is also showing “The Christmas Quangle Wangle” which promises to be a madcap show that will have you dancing in your seats, it’s a must this festive season for anyone from the age of 3 to 93.
The Christmas Quangle Wangle is a production full of hilarious celebration and musical voyage into the wild and wonderful world of Edward Lear’s nonsense poetry, which promises to be an exciting and festive theatrical treat for the whole family.
Christmas Quangle Wangle will be showing at the Guildhall Theatre from Thursday 10th December to Thursday 24th December 2009.
To enjoy what Christmas is all about, what about going to Derby Cathedral to enjoy some Christmas delights. On Wednesday 23rd December at 3.00pm there is a service called “Journey to Bethlehem” a crib service for families, where children are encouraged to come dressed as a character from the nativity story.
Then on Christmas Eve, Thursday 24th December, they are holding, The Christmas Carol Service at 4.00pm and 6.30pm. They are also holding their regular midnight mass of Christmas at 11.30pm.
Then on Christmas day, a service at 10.45am is hold by the Bishop of Derby, where the celebration of Christmas takes place.
