The Christmas Playground
This festive season, Derby Live will be playing host to “Christmas Playground”. This is the first time Derby has first ever held an event like this in its kind. “Christmas Playground” will feature giant wooden toy sculptures which will provide a play area for visitors to the city centre seeking a rest from Christmas shopping. Children will be encouraged to climb aboard the giant toys – carved by local wood sculpture Andrew Frost and let their imagination run wild.
This was clearly seen when we went to visit “The Christmas Playground” where all ages were able to explore and play upon the different wooden sculptures. In all there are six sculptures, for which are a toy soldier, Toyota car, teddy bear, little plane, Bombardier train and the University of Derby Penguins.
Children are encouraged to play an active role through workshops at QUAD, Derby’s centre for art and film, they will be able to get involved in competitions and activities such as ‘Colour the soldier’, ‘Name the bear’ and making wooden decorations for the Christmas tree in the market place.
The local community will also benefit from “The Christmas Playground” as once the playground is removed from the market place, the wooden sculptures will be relocated to the new Royal Derby Hospital for the enjoyment of visitors and patients.
At the site of “The Christmas Playground” there is the Christmas tree and a Nativity Scene for which is going too blessed on Tuesday 22nd of December at 7:30pm where all the family are invited to come along too.
