Weather update: Heavy snowfall to continue over weekend

Further heavy snowfall is predicted across the region into the weekend, continuing days of disruption on the roads and school closures.

Snow showers are predicted for Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, and Leicestershire.

 

Parts of Derbyshire and Leicestershire are also expected to see heavy snowfall on Sunday.

 

Forecasters said several centimetres will fall each day in affected areas.

 

The conditions have led to icy roads and pavements.

 

The Met Office said the prolonged cold period was the worst the county had seen for more than 20 years.

 

Operations have been postponed at the Royal Derby Hospital because beds are being used for cold weather emergencies.

 

Police in Lincolnshire have reported a three-fold increase in the number of car accidents due to the snowy weather.

 

In Nottinghamshire some homecare services were being scaled back to one visit per day. Scouts have been helping to deliver meals on wheels in the county.
