Description:
Councils with low reserves of salt are receiving deliveries from those with larger supplies, to ensure major roads are safe to use.
It’s really good when communities work with each other. DERBY'S dwindling grit reserves have been boosted after an emergency delivery of 50 tonnes from Lincolnshire local authority.
The delivery was sent to the city council yesterday by Lincolnshire County Council, under the Government's "mutual aid" scheme.
The initiative enables councils with low reserves of salt to receive deliveries from those with larger supplies, to ensure major roads are safe to use.
Christine Durrant, the city council's assistant director for highways and transport, said it meant the authority could get over the immediate shortfall.
She said: "The council currently has around 75 tonnes of road salt remaining in stock – enough to last around a day of heavy snow. We're expecting further deliveries tomorrow.
