A Superstore plan in Allenton revealed.

After five years of speculation. TESCO has finally revealed it is drawing up plans for a superstore in Allenton.

The supermarket giant wants to build a 60,000 sq ft store on the land off Osmaston Road, where Allenton Market and the Mitre pub are located.

And its plans include creating an improved market somewhere on the site for stallholders.

David Reynolds, chairman of Allenton Market Traders' Association, said he had been talking to developers about the proposals and believed the plans would be a positive move for the area.

"The market will stay and I think it will be a 110% improvement for the 70 traders I represent," he said.

"I also think it will be good news for the people in the area because it will regenerate this site.

But businesses in Allenton district centre fear a Tesco could spell the end of their trade.

Dee McIlwee, manager of Arden News in Osmaston Road, said: "A Tesco here would put us out of business and a lot of other people out of business."

Developer Mountview Securities Investment has been buying up sections of land off Osmaston Road for the past five years and has already acquired the Mitre pub and several houses in Whitehurst Street and Osmaston Road.

Its managing director, Nick Chappell, said Tesco was now drawing up plans and he was in talks.

"It would be a medium-sized store, I think. We have got to finalise any plans but it is not going to be a Tesco Metro." He said.
