In a bid to provide the best learning experience for college students in Derby, Derby’s largest college, “Derby College” merged with South East Derbyshire College in mid February 2010.
The college was established in March 2002 as a result of the merger between three Derbyshire Colleges; Joseph Wright 6th Form Centre, Broomfield Hall and Prince Charles Avenue and now The Round House.
Despite South East Derbyshire College rejecting to merge with the three eight years ago, it recently agreed to the merge, which took place on 15th February 2010.
After the merger, Graham Bolton, chairman of South East Derbyshire governors said;"Since I became chairman three years ago, we have been seeking ways to improve opportunities for learners in the Amber Valley and Erewash areas.
He also added. "Naturally I am delighted that we are to become part of Derby College. I firmly believe that this will bring both short-term and long-term benefits to students."
David Croll, Derby College principal, said: "Our shared vision for the merger was to transform further education in Derby and Derbyshire – raising participation, attainment and the skills levels of young people and adults.
The governing body of Derby College is separately proposing to the Secretary of State that the name of the college to be changed to Derbyshire College to reflect the changed nature of the college.
The principal reason advanced by the governors of the colleges in support of the proposal is to create a cost effective high quality general further education college which builds on the strengths of the two colleges.
The merged college will also meet the changing needs of learners and support the developing local infrastructure and the regional economy.
The merged college will aim to increase learner participation and success rates within the area – particularly where there is significant under representation amongst identifiable groups of potential learners.
